Family and Consumer Sciences

Family and Consumer Sciences is an undergraduate/post bachelor interdepartmental major in the College of Applied Human Sciences offering two concentrations: Family and Consumer Sciences Education – which prepares students for a secondary teacher license; and, Family and Consumer Sciences – which prepares students for positions in agencies, government, and businesses. The largest percentage of majors are within the Education concentration.

Uniqueness: Colorado State University is the only four year land-grant institution of higher education in Colorado offering a degree program in Family and Consumer Sciences. Because the Family and Consumer Sciences program is interdepartmental/interdisciplinary, students take coursework primarily in the departments of Human Development and Family Studies, Food Science and Human Nutrition, and Design and Merchandising as well as specific Family and Consumer Sciences courses. Because Colorado State University offers these various departments we in the FCS program are able to provide students with a breadth of content they will be expected to teach when they take on teaching positions at the secondary level. Our students are qualified to take on any FCS position with a base of knowledge in multiple content areas.
Program Focus/Mission: Family and Consumer Sciences is an interdisciplinary field providing graduates with skills to assist consumers and families with quality of life decisions and challenges in the areas of interpersonal relationships, human development and parenting, nutrition and food science, resource management/consumer and financial literacy, and balancing family and work. Students study the roles of individuals within families, and as consumers. Students gain insight into the choices that impact daily personal and family well being. They have the expertise to critically examine decisions and problems and suggest solutions based on a holistic approach. The education concentration students meet the requirements for teacher licensure and career and technical credentialing within the 120 credits mandated by the state.
